Overview
In June, China's General Administration of Customs released statistics on the import and export of stainless steel and key raw materials. Notably, net exports of stainless steel increased, despite a decrease in both imports and exports on a month-to-month basis. Imports of scrap stainless steel also saw a decline.
Import Statistics
- June Imports:
- Total stainless steel imports were 131,300 tons, down by 43,100 tons (24.72%) compared to May.
- Year-on-year, this represents an increase of 13,200 tons (11.16%).
- Imports from Indonesia were 108,100 tons, a decrease of 39,900 tons (26.96%) from May, but an increase of 16,800 tons (18.4%) compared to June last year.
- January to June Imports:
- Total imports reached 1.1078 million tons, up by 265,000 tons (31.44%) year-on-year.
- Imports from Indonesia were 956,100 tons, an increase of 313,400 tons (48.76%).
Export Statistics
- June Exports:
- Stainless steel exports stood at 452,800 tons, a reduction of 4,900 tons (1.06%) from May.
- This marks an increase of 109,500 tons (31.89%) from June last year.
- January to June Exports:
- Total exports amounted to 2.3648 million tons, up by 325,900 tons (15.99%) from the same period last year.
Net Export Figures

- Net exports reached 321,600 tons, an increase of 38,400 tons (13.56%) from May.
- This represents a year-on-year increase of 96,400 tons (42.80%).
- January to June Net Exports:
- Total net exports were 1.257 million tons, an increase of 60,900 tons (5.09%) from the same period last year.
Scrap Stainless Steel Imports
- June Imports:
- Scrap stainless steel imports were 6,730 tons, a decline of 3,300 tons (33.01%) from May.
- This is a decrease of 11,300 tons (62.61%) from June last year.
- January to June Imports:
- Total imports of scrap stainless steel were 54,900 tons, down by 129,300 tons (70.20%) year-on-year.
In summary, while both imports and exports of stainless steel decreased in June, net exports increased, indicating a positive trend in China's stainless steel trade balance.
